Three Whitbys, and who each one suits
The lake: Port Whitby and Whitby Shores
The south end is where Whitby meets Lake Ontario, around the Port Whitby marina and the waterfront trail, with Lynde Shores Conservation Area on the lakefront nearby. Whitby GO is a short drive away on the Lakeshore East line, which is why the newer homes and townhomes here tend to appeal to people who commute to Toronto by train.
The old town: Downtown Whitby
Brock Street is the spine of the historic core. Century homes and infill fill the streets around it, and the shops, restaurants and Cullen Central Park are close enough to walk to. It is the part of Whitby where dinner out does not need a car, and it is where Laura’s office sits.
The north: Brooklin and Taunton North
Brooklin is a village that has kept its historic main street while growing quickly, with larger newer homes around it. Taunton North, closer to the 407, is a newer area of detached homes and townhomes. Highway 412 ties the north end back to the 401 and the 407. This is where Whitby buyers usually go when space is the priority.
The established middle of town
Between the lake and the north end sits most of Whitby’s detached housing. Williamsburg and Pringle Creek are established central family neighbourhoods, close to schools and parks. Blue Grass Meadows and Rolling Acres add a mix of detached homes, mostly from the 1980s and 1990s. These streets tend to be the middle of the Whitby price range, in line with comparable homes in Ajax.

A brick and stone bungalow built in 2008 on a quiet, tree-lined street near Baldwin and Sleepy Hollow. Two bedrooms on the main floor, a fully finished lower level with an in-law suite, a lot of about 43 by 98 feet and parking for five.
It is a good example of a layout that rewards a careful read: main-floor living for one household, and a separate lower-level suite that could suit another.
Getting to Toronto from Whitby
Whitby GO runs on the Lakeshore East line to Union Station. By car, the 401 crosses the south end of town, the 407 runs through the north, and the 412 links the two. Which side of Whitby you choose usually decides which of those you will use every day.
